CHRISSY JO CRADICK (Makeup Artist/Actress/Model)

The PM Team first laid eyes on Chrissy jo Cradick at the 2011 Crypticon Film Convention, in Edina, MN.  This happy-go-lucky, bubbily, pint-sized cuteness was almost surreal, wearing Minnie Mouse ears and donning a cheerleader-esque personality. we weren’t sure whether to run away, or swoop her up into our arms and hug her to death. April Syrup

I recently caught up with April Syrup while she was visiting her hometown of San Francisco. However, as this posts, the graphic artist, fashion designer, and model is currently back in Tokyo, the city she's called home for the last few years. A Temple University of Japan alumna, April chose to remain in Japan for a few years after graduating in 2010, to begin her art and design career. She often holds her own events in and around Tokyo, where she (who better?) models many of her own creations, a sample of which is at left.

After catching a Facebook wall post of April's that revealed she was back in the States, I decided to shoot her a message to ask if she'd like to be featured here. She said she would just to see if her entry would get more hits than her twin sister's did when I featured her last year. Just kidding about that last part. The girls are very supportive of each other and April was happy to answer a few questions for me, including why she chose the moniker "Syrup." Assuming that's not her real name is just as much of a no-brainer as figuring out what her real name is, since her twin (yes, twin) sister Aby goes by her real surname.

Old Videos With Yours Truly

I love it when my friends record their drunken birthday behavior. This was at Brian and Amy's for her birthday last year. I'm pretty sure I was the only sober person there. Brian explains that his porn name is Justice Naked.

This was New Years Eve 2010. I had A LOT of champagne. These gatherings are my favorite. It's fun to go to events but when you spend time with people you grew up with and hold closest to your hearts in a home far away from drunk drivers, it's more special. It's fun to act like a tard every once in a while.

Surprisingly, this video had over 17 thousand hits. One of these days I'm actually going to watch it again. I'm eating fried chicken and talking about horror films. Don't mind me, I could talk about my extensive knowledge on the subject for hours and hours. This is why it's such a joy to hang out with me. If you try to battle my wits, you will lose.

Here's a video that I made in 2010 I think? Of me and my friends in the Texas horror industry. I didn't realize music runs out towards the end of the video.

LOL OMG! I just came across this video Jason made forever ago where I talk about video nasties. We just shot a scene for Fractured so I'm all bloody. I didn't watch the whole video. I probably sound like a dork but my stomach looked great! Thanks to all of my gymnastic and dance training.

Found another video of me rambling about guess what???? HORROR MOVIES.

MOVIE REVIEW: 'The Descendants'

Brad Pitt is off camera wearing a skirt...hence the look.

Films like The Descendants take a rather large measure of courage to make. Simple human dramas free of storytelling or visual gimmicks that actually achieve a measure of heart are harder and harder to find anyway, but what percentage of those ever feel like they capture the messiness of family life and the confusion that comes with loss and new beginnings?

Hollywood is the land of perfect little bows at the end of every story. The ending isn’t always happy (though that’s what audiences always demand), but the conclusions are supposed to arrive without ambiguity, without loose ends. It’s supposed to happen because moviegoers demand that it happens, because no matter how much ranting and raving against the blockbuster establishment you hear, most of the people in the theatre around you really don’t want the movies to be more like real life.

The Descendants never second guesses itself when it comes to the story it’s trying to tell. It never hedges toward Hollywood predictability, never tries to wrap things up simply and neatly. It’s not just a film about how messy the great dramas of our lives can be. It’s a film about why it matters that they’re messy, and why sometimes we need it to be that way.

Matt King (George Clooney) is a Honolulu attorney in way over his head. His wife is in a coma after a major boating accident, and he’s not prepared for life as a single parent. His youngest daughter Scottie (Amara Miller) is acting out in a number of hostile ways in the wake of her mother’s accident, while his eldest Alexandra (Shailene Woodley) doesn’t want to see her mother at all after a mysterious fight the pair had sometime before the coma.

On top of this, Matt is overseeing a real estate dealing for a large parcel of “virgin” Hawaiian land that his family has maintained in a trust for decades. They’re descendants of Hawaiian royalty, you see, and this is all that’s left of the family legacy. Odds are the land will become a tourist spot, but all Matt’s concerned about is keeping his army of cousins happy with the sale.

Then two bombshells hit Matt over the course of two days. One, delivered by a doctor, is that his wife will never make up, and a provision in her will calls for her to be taken off life support. The other, delivered by Alexandra, is that before her accident her mother was having an affair.

What follows is a funny, heartbreaking and often chaotic journey in which Matt, accompanied by his daughters and a kid named Sid (Nick Krause), attempts to track down the “other man” in his wife’s life, find some closure, and learn to be a better father.

The key ingredient to nailing the tone of such a story was always going to be director Alexander Payne, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Nat Faxon and Jim Rash. Payne is a master of bittersweet stories, as films like Sideways and About Schmidt prove. Both of those films are about men who have lost something too – faith, a loved one, confidence, youth – but neither of them go quite this deeply into the realms of confusion and dizzying frustration. Imagine needing so badly to confront someone that can’t answer for themselves, but their body is still right there, hovering over every decision you make. Elizabeth King (Patricia Hastie) never speaks, and she’s only shown with her eyes open once (in a flashback) throughout the entire film, but her presence lingers behind Matt’s eyes for every frame of this film.

Payne chooses to begin the presentation of this dilemma by having his hero spout a brief diatribe about people who think that Hawaiian citizens live out their days in a paradise. Matt King has a few choice words for paradise, and it’s very clear that he’s not living in it. Yet Payne fills his visual compositions with reminders of Hawaiian beauty, creating a duality that only makes the film more fascinating. By the time it’s over, you realize that The Descendants wasn’t just about beauty next to ugliness. It was also about beauty inside the ugliness.

The other key to the film is Clooney, who gives the performance of his career by becoming a believably ordinary man pushed to his emotional limits. The strong leading man melts away here, and in its place is a performance of absolute vulnerability and pain punctuated by subtle but often crackling humor. The other standout is Woodley, who matches Clooney in nearly every scene with an emotional depth many actresses twice her age can’t muster.

The Descendants is a challenging film for some viewers, but if you simply allow it to carry you on its journey of heartbreak, redemption and, ultimately, love, you will be amazed by the genuine heart you find. It’s a film of aching beauty and power from one of our most gifted directors.

Sleepaway Camp 2: Unhappy Campers 1988 - Review

Summer camps are supposed to be a place where children and teenagers can go and have fun for a few weeks every summer. That’s not the case when a killer is on the loose and even more disturbing is the fact that SHE used to be a HE.
The story begins years ago at a campfire with 1 girl and a group of boys telling horror stories around the fire in the woods.  It is learned that Angela/Peter Baker, the Camp Arawak killer from the first movie, has had a full sex change operation while in a mental institution and was released. Angela (Pamela Springsteen) is now a camp counselor at Camp New Horizons and no one knowing about her past.  She shows up to keep Phoebe (Heather Binion) from hanging with the boys and in Angela’s opinion acting like a slut.  Walking back to camp there is an argument and Angela leaves Phoebe to walk back by herself.  Phoebe loses her way but never fear, Angela shows up to help her find it with a stick to the head.  Since Phoebe had such a filthy mouth her tongue gets cut out as well.  Angela is at it again not stopping till she has “sent home” all of the campers that are not good kids.  In her opinion that is all of them.  Not even the macho head counselor T.C. (Brian Patrick Clarke) and his super mullet can stop her.

I want to start with saying that the director Michael A Simpson did a fantastic job of continuing the storyline of the original Sleepaway camp.  While Robert Hiltzik did a great job with the original movie, Michael took it a step further and adding dark comedy and less of a serious atmosphere.  This sequel is also filled with famous names as well.  Pamela Springsteen the little sister of “the boss” Bruce Springsteen, Renee Estevez who is the sister of Emilio Estevez and Charlie Sheen and let’s not forget the late Walter Gotell.  Rule #1 for a good slasher movie is you can’t enjoy it nearly as much unless there is bad acting.  The acting is not horrible, but not really great either.  At the same time Unhappy Campers is able to deliver a fun movie to watch.
I first saw this movie at the young age of 9 years old.  Yes folks, I had very cool parents that let me watch this kind of filth at a young age which may explain my twisted mind at the age of 31.  Anyway, when I first watched this movie I was hooked.  My dad and I rented it from Blockbuster video and I made him watch it 4 times before we returned the movie the next day.  I have to admit I had a HUGE crush on Pamela Springsteen and not even afraid that her big brother Bruce might beat me up for it.  It’s no secret that I am a huge slasher fan but some of my favorites involve some kind of camp or just in the woods.  It adds so much more to the whole creepy stalking factor.  This movie eluded me for many years.  By the time I was able to actually buy the movie for myself when I had a job at the age of 17 the movie as long out of print with no plans of release on DVD just yet.  2002 came along and the morning the box set was released I was at Best Buy before they even opened to buy the first copy off the shelves.  This was a good move because 2 weeks later the Red Cross had a fit they used the cross on the front of the Survival Kit box set cover and they all had to be pulled off the shelves to have it removed.  While all incarnations of this movie are all out of print you are able to find it on Amazon.com for a pretty decent price.  If you have not seen this movie, you just flat out need to.  Stay Twisted Everyone!

Streets of Gold

Nearly twelve years ago, I sat down with a friend to write a show we called, Streets of Gold.  The show would be a comedy about Persians living in the United States.  It would be funny, daring, entertaining and powerful.

We wrote a total of three scripts and they were funny as hell.  Now after a dozen years, over a hundred and forty-four months, this project is finally going to be shot.  It's ready to be shot and it needs to be shot.
Usually I don't talk about projects until they are nearly done because it has proven to be a deadly practice in the past.  After a while though; you get tired of worrying about what could go wrong and just get down to putting it out into the universe and seeing what comes back to you.
We did a full cast rehearsal a few weeks ago in a 99 seat theater in Hollywood.  I invited a few friends to critique.   The actors did a fantastic job.  It was a good time.  Since then I've written two more revisions of the scripts with my partner and tonight I got to hear the two leads do their lines.

Sitting there in that room with the two actors who will bear the responsibility of not ruining this show;  I realized that I'm glad we waited this long to do this project.  Independent of the subject matter, independent of the horrors of 9 / 11 and independent of the revolutions in the Middle East, it's time to do this show.  Now.
Recently I was sitting at a Starbucks and I overheard a guy talking about how it had taken him a year to raise the money to do his project.  A whopping five grand that he raised from his mom and dad.  He was talking about how tough it was to get the financing in place and now he had to finish the script.  I was thinking, 'Fuck this guy.  One year?  I've been waiting twelve and you don't hear me standing in line for a latte acting like I just beat Spielberg out for an Oscar.'

By the way, this guy wasn't a kid, he was a grown man begging off of his parents and he didn't even have a finished script.  Don't get me wrong, there have been times I wish I could go to Mom and Dad and pull a little something out of their accounts to play producer / director but that wasn't in the cards.

At any rate, he's doing his project and I'm doing mine, no matter how they come about; I guess that's all that matters.  The reason I'm writing about it now is I realized that no matter how long it takes or how it gets done, you've got to get it done.
One year, twelve years, five thousand or five million, investors or mom and dad, who cares?  In the end, it's all the same, did you do your project?  Did you take the chances?  Did you give yourself the chance to succeed?

Will these streets turn out to be Streets of Gold?  I don't know.  No one does but we're going to put everything we have into it.  And I hope when your turn comes up, you'll do the same.  We'll keep you posted.  Until then, Filmmakers First.  Thanks for reading.

(Please note, I do not know the Persian woman in the berka, this is not my Cast, this is not my Starbucks Cup, these are not the parents of the guy in line at Starbucks and these dice, well, I don't like craps but it looks fun.  The rights to these photos are exclusively those of the folks who took the photos).  Thanks  D

Film Deviant Gets More Deviant With Dead Hooker

The Soska sisters have created a gory fucking blasty blast of a film.

Film Deviant is a very wicked cool horror review site that we came to know by one of their sweet writers, Bryan Martinez. These folks love horror - there is a shit ton of reviews on their site for every horror flick you love and many independents that you might have never even heard of. Looking for a new site to get you gore load on? Well, Film Deviant just might be what the doctor ordered - you can check their glossary of horror flicks here and interviews here.

So, Bryan took DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK home to watch with a group of friends the other night. What was the verdict? Did our dead girl manage to handle a large group without disappointing? She is dead after all.
"The Soska Sisters (aka Twisted Twins...because, well, they're twins and they film twisted things) are a fresh breed of filmmakers. In the tradition of Jason Eisner and his Hobo With A Shotgun and Tom Six with his Human Centipede films, Dead Hooker In A Trunk is another great example of filmmaking with the sole intention of letting all the sick and twisted visions out of one's head.

Now, I mentioned the Human Centipede films and Hobo With A Shotgun because that's the kind of thing that Dead Hooker In A Trunk evokes. Films that don't really exist in the scope of a safe society...but, goddamn, they're so much fun to the rest of us. Aren't they? I remember watching Hobo With A Shotgun in a packed midnight theater and that proved to be my favorite movie-going experience of 2011. Well, I recently sat down with a small group of film lovers to watch my new copy of Dead Hooker.

I think that it's important to point out how much I love these kinds of films. I live for dead hookers in trunks and hobos with shotguns and 12-person human centipedes. That's the kind of stuff that flows through my blood. So, while I will rate this film on a technical scale, my final blood score might seem a little biased.
"

Fucking rights! Yay! You can read the whole lovely review here. Spread it around. Get your HOOKER on, heck, check the review, call in your buddies and make it a Canuxploitation night! Thank you to Bryan for watching our film and getting the word out.

The biggest, most large, stupid happy, thank you to everyone who has been supporting this film and making this release the success that it has been. You guys have been phenomenal in giving us the ability to continue making films like this.

STARTED OUT DARK, ENDED UP TWITCHY

I started writing this blog in somewhatof a dark place. For the first time since doing this, I asked myself “what's the point?” Abram's Handwas denied for the first time in a festival. Not upset about notgetting in necessarily, but bummed because I was again faced thatthis isn't always about talent or who's film is better. It's aboutconnections. It's about names. It's about money. And then talent.

Ididn't necessarily mind the idea of not playing the fest. It's oneof those things. And in the past year, we had more than our share ofsuccesses. But the list of films comes out and you see remakes of TVshows and such...well, I went a little Vader after Padme died. “Nooooooo!” This isn't to say I felt that about every film thatgot in. Not at all. Ya'Ke's film WOLF is premiering there. I'm inawe of him as a director. I was his student at Texas and I thinkhe's got a brilliant eye. It deserves the honor. And I saw Gaybyat SlamDance as a short and am excited to see the full thing.

So,again, I was asking “what's the point?”

Thepoint is to realize this: “They” want me to quit. So, theminute I do, it lets them win. Gives them one less obstacle tooblock their way. So, the key is to gut through the disappointmentand set backs and find a new angle of positivity. New energy to workharder. So, while the point of the blog was originally to railagainst the unfairness of the situation, I'm gonna go with a morepositive tone. Focus on how I'm going to keep my energy andpositivity.

  1. My wife. I cannot say enough about what she means to me and what she's done to help us grow.  She's beautiful, genuine and the sweetest person I know.  Truly a better person than I.
  2. The Twitchy owners: Chris Copple shoots a movie better than most people I know. And really helps keep me moving. Especially when I need my meds.  Or when our backs are against the wall.  And Nathan Bybee has a unique way of staying positive just when I need him to be.
  3. The Twitchy Folks: People like: Stephanie Dunbar, Terissa Kelton, Natalie Wilemon, Richard Jones, Caitlin Sweeney, Brandi Blevins, Francis Casanova, Sonia Melendez, Aaron Gaudin, Will Cooper, Billy and Elizabeth Kring, Colby Wallingsford, Christen Holder, Derick Morris, Ashley Serrao, Vanessa Perry, Benjamin Jabe, Phillip Emmanuel, Conrad Gonzales, Allison Wood, Mark McCarver, Orion Gallagher, Jenn Nicole and so many others. Even Jimmy Donovan. These folks have worked so hard on past projects and touched me with their talents and really humbled me with their effort.
  4. The cast of 3 References. Full of new faces. So many talents. I'm as excited as heck to get started. Those guys are really, really funny.
  5. The CineMafia. Our word for the other filmmakers who are “like” us. Gary Warren is a brother to me (even though he'd prefer to read the more angry version of this blog). Carlo Rodriguez is one of the hardest working guys I know. Janet Mayson brings such infectious enthusiasm to everything she does. Mike Donis is the same, just more Canadian. Sharon Wright is like an old school Hollywood starlet. Full of grace (and sometimes a foul mouth, which I love :-) Ford Austin is a guy who is just motivating to be around. And Marc Wasserman brings shots! (and so much more. The guy can act. And I have genuine love for that dude.) Scott and Kandi Duns are this amazing husband and wife couple that have gone all in for eachother like Jess and I have. All of these folks, including Koran Dunbar our new friend we just met wow me with their work ethic and creativity that I'm inspired to try and keep up.
So,that's where I'm left . It's always darkest before the dawn. And Ihonestly feel that I will get back to it tomorrow and be full speedahead. For those of you who sign on to work with us, better keep upor get off the train completely. Cause we won't slow down and we'renot afraid to run folks over.

Thought I'd link you guys to the members of the "CineMafia" for some insight into their projects and such.

Del Toro To Produce DAY OF THE DEAD

As Guillermo del Toro continues filming his upcoming alien disaster flick Pacific Rim he has added another film to his ever growing list but this time as a producer for DAY OF THE DEAD, that will be directed by Jorge R. Gutierrez.

Don't worry, this Day of the Dead isn't a Romero remake of his classic zombie movie but will actually by a Romeo and Juliet CG film based on the Mexican holiday known as Dia de los Muertos that's celebrated between the first and second of November that honors the deceased, with festivals, parades, prayers and offerings of food.

Gutierrez, penned the script with Doug Langdale and the Mexican based F/X company Reel FX will tackle the CG. Look for Day of the Dead in 2014.
